Monkey Man - Old Post
I didn't do anything today besides use my pc and play some boomer shooters on discord.
I figure I'll tell the tale of how I met Monkey Man.
I was homeless and sleeping down by the river, there was a large pavilion building right on the river that I usually set up camp to sleep.
There was a bench there, and this older man, short in stature and wiry looking would sit on the bench, unravel a cloth and set a timepiece on it. Then he'd crack open a few 211s and whistle at women that walked by and yell at the ducks.
I was at first on edge because he was invading my camp site and didn't acknowledge me at all, it set off red flags and I'd sleep at other spots.
One day I was setting up camp there and he came along. I went over to the bench and we sat and chilled, he gave me some 211s to get drunk on.
His eyes were yellow from sclerosis, but that didn't stop him.
We exchanged some information about each of our situations. The topic switched to drugs. I originally asked him if he knew a plug for some acid. As acid is the holy grail for me, It always eludes me. People say they have it but it never works out or they try to do some dumb bullshit and get my money.
Anyways, he said his buddy in his apartment knew a plug. I went over there, it was a section 8 apartment, very sparse looking and an old tv with wood paneling playing staticy stations.
His buddy was missing his legs and forever cast into a wheelchair, from what I do not know, I never asked.
He tries giving me a piece of news paper stating it's acid, I tell him to fuck off. You encounter a bunch of people like this in the poverty world. I'm not sure if they were made this way through poverty or just born that way into helplessnes and hell.
I have a handle of vodka on me and we start drinking, I get pretty drunk and see a crack pipe on the table. I have 800$ on me from selling my snap card, I never used it as the shelters provided enough food for me.
I give him 50$ the plug lives in the same building, a large, in shape, black dude, pearly white teeth. We all do a hit. It's the best feeling I ever achieved in my life. I instantly wanted more.
We smoked and drank all night until 9am. I get a text reminder that I have an appointment with my case manager. At this point I am the most fucked up I've ever been, but the cocaine is doing the body movements for me.
Instead of rescheduling, I decide to attend the appointment.
I walk about a mile up the road to the support center, I'm not going to name names due to personal identifying information.
I get there, I go into a back room with her, we sit down.
She immediately tells me that everytime we meet I'm drunk. I don't deny it.
At this point I am very dehydrated and overheating. I put my head on her desk and rub my forehead on the cool surface.
I tell her I've been up all night smoking crack and drinking.
She immediately calls 911 and I get taken into an ambulance to the hospital.
They take my alcohol level and it.s 0.32, but I'm an expert drunk. I feel completely sober, I'm expressing none of the alcoholic tells. To anyone, I'm completely sober. I heard a 'god damn' in the background after they do the test. I feel kind of proud for some reason.
I'm on a hospital bed tossing and turning, going through immense withdrawals. They have a nurse there watching me to make sure I don't kill myself or anyone.
When I open my eyes I see bugs all over the walls, I point them out to the nurse and she insists they aren't there. But I can see them crawling all over the wall, like a patterned shadow cast onto a white snow.
I close my eyes in an attempt to sleep. I start seeing things with my eyes closed. Family, Friends, Dead relatives, I see the side of their faces as they turn to face me and their faces are demonic looking, their skin is melting off the bone.
I hallucinated and was dying of withdrawals until a new nurse came in to take over and offered me some ativan. I gladly accepted.
I woke up in the psych ward at the same hospital where I met a good friend named Sue.
There's some history between me and her that this isn't the right place to tell it, maybe next time.
After this colossal fuck up, It gave me the help I needed to get out of that situation, but it took a few years.
I even saw monkey man around a few times downtown, but that was back in 2023. I haven't seen him since. I'm assuming he died of liver failure from drinking so much. Here's to Monkey Man, a great friend, an alcoholic fiend, and a character if you will.
